Ben and I purchased new rain gear this weekend as ours was absolutely worn out. As an OHSU student, Ben had a pass to the Columbia employee store where all in-season Columbia items are about 50% off. On Sunday, after a great gear shopping spree, we escaped the city in the pouring rain and chilly first day of Fall weather to go for a hike and test the new items. We stopped at two places in Forest Park, the beautiful park on the Northwest end of the city - the Audubon Society of Portland and the Wildwood trailhead. At the Audubon, we saw a red-tailed hawk and a gorgeous raven and walked a mile loop through the gorgeous, untouched Oregon forest. Creeks and fall leaves dotted the trail and we hiked through the pouring rain and high fifty degree weather in the quiet afternoon.
When we got to the Wildwood trailhead and started our mini-hike, we were in awe. It was absolutely pristine forest - great evergreens rising in the mist, big leaf maples speckled with rain, and moss everywhere. The trail was muddy and little beetles ran across it like they hadn't ever experienced human traffic there before. We passed only a few other walkers and some trail runners and were able to enjoy the hour and a half in total human silence, just listening to the rain and wind and leaves rustling. It was magical and if you're in Portland, I'd highly recommend taking a misty day to hike around Forest Park.
